Chapter One : Shiite Creed Vis-à-vis Allah

بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم

We Ithna Ashari (twelver) Shias, i.e. those who believe in the presence of a living, contemporary Imam (a.t.f.s.) and who benefit from the bounty of his guidance, hold distinct beliefs concerning Allah the High, His Attributes, Perfections, and our position in front of Him. These pure and clear beliefs that have become a part of our culture and lives are all conferred on account of divine mercy and grace, and endowed because of clinging on to the Holy Quran and the Ahle Bait (a.s.). Therefore, it is necessary, while contemplating on these; we thank Allah the Almighty profusely and value the bounties of Holy Quran and the Ahle Bait (a.s.). We hold the following beliefs concerning Allah, the Almighty:

Signs of Allah, the Refuge of Creatures

  1. The God that we believe in is the One, in whom every afflicted servant
seeks refuge during severe calamities and extreme hardships and begs for help and assistance. (Surah Al-Isra [17:67] , Surah Al-`Ankabut [29:65] , Surah Luqman [31:32])
  2. We believe that our God has created the universe full of His signs and indicators through which He has shown us His divinity, lordship, creation, mercy, power, greatness, and other perfect attributes. That we may always remember Him and be convinced of His promise regarding the next world.
    • From His signs, is that He has created live herbs and animals from dead earth. He causes living things to die. He enlivens the earth in spring after its death during the cold of the winter. Similarly, He will resurrect us from the dead earth. (Surah Ar-Rum [30:19])
    • From His signs, is that He has created the dynamic and mobile man from the immobile soil in a way that this lifeless and static soil gains life and acquires mobility. (Surah Ar-Rum [30:20])

• From His signs, is that He has made spouses for us from our own species in whom we rest, and that He has instilled love and mercy for each other in partners in marriage. People with wisdom and intelligence should deliberate and contemplate on these and be guided through divine prudence as to how Allah perpetuates human life and triggers activity, happiness, joy, and excitement in it. (Surah Ar-Rum [30:21])
• From His signs, is that He has created the great skies and the expansive earth with system, continuity, harmony, beauty, and greatness while making all of these like one cohesive and organized body. (Surah Luqman [31:10] , Surah Ar-Ra’d [13:2])
• From His signs, is that He has created differences among people that they may be distinguished from each other. He has given to each nation a language, accent, and special voice resonance and made them of different hues and colors. Nevertheless, he has made the children resemble their fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and other citizens of their nation that this resemblance and similarity may be a source of attachment and affinity towards them. (Surah Ar-Rum [30:22])
• From His signs, is the sleep that comes involuntary to us in the night through to the next day. On one hand, it enables us to remove our physical and mental tiredness and fatigue. Also, our works, expectations and hopes may not engross us in themselves uninterrupted and unceasingly and that we may not lose our self-consciousness. Hence, we are forced to rest (through sleep). On the other hand, we find that it is our Lord, and not we ourselves, Who has the reigns of our control in His hands. Whenever He wants, He can take back all our powers, strengths, and abilities from us. Thus, every night and day, He manifests His power and domination, while showing us our weakness and infirmity. (Surah Ar-Rum [30:23] , Surah Az-Zumar [39:42])
• From His signs, is that He has instilled in us the hopes of earning our bread and butter. He has placed in us the power and strength to acquire permissible (حلال)food. He has also not made us hopeless and desperate from gaining further grace and bounty.
• From His signs, is the lightning that appears among the clouds to enable us to be attentive towards His great power hidden in nature. We feel scared and fearful from the awesome thunder, and the power and speed of its blitzkrieg. At the same time, we also realize our weakness and smallness in front of Allah the Almighty. On the other hand, we get the tidings of rain and blessings and hence, before it pours, we welcome it with joy and happiness and express our wholehearted gratitude to Him. (Surah Ar-Rum [30:24])

• From His signs, is the water, which He sends down from the skies after creating thunder and lightning among the clouds. Through it, He enlivens earth and makes it fresh green after it was dry and dead. (Surah Al-Baqarah [2:22])
• From His signs, is that the skies and the earth subsist and survive without collapsing till He desires. But when Allah intends to announce the Day of Judgment, the system of the universe will transform drastically. After this change and destruction of all things, an altogether new setup will be established and on His order, all humans will raise their heads from the graves. (Surah Ar-Rum [30:25])
All these and other innumerable phenomena in the cosmos are His signs in nature to enable us to realize that the world around us, including ourselves, are regulated on His instructions. Till He so wants, we will survive and continue to exist and whenever He intends, we will be changed and transformed.

Mastership of God

  • We believe that the real Master and the Creator of the entire universe is our Lord and we are His servants. Whatever we own and possess, is from Him and we don’t own anything originally (Surah Fatir [35:15]).
Therefore, instead of indulging in self-deception and considering ourselves to be great, needless and independent of Allah, we must confess that we are His poor, lowly, needy and indigent servants and always tied up with Him. Like beggars and paupers, we must always ask Him and never feel arrogant from beseeching or imploring Him. We should not only not feel ashamed in confessing that we are His slaves, servants, maids, and in need of Him, rather we must feel proud that we are the servants of such a powerful and great God. Hence, we must supplicate,
“O God! It is enough honor for me that I be Your slave, and it sufficient pride for me that You are my Lord. O God! You are like how I love; therefore make me as You love.1
  1. Since we don’t consider ourselves as the masters of the universe and, in fact, deem ourselves to be Allah’s creatures and slaves and that we belong to Him, we must not permit ourselves to do whatever we like in His kingdom through the media and means provided by Him. On the contrary, we must make it obligatory on ourselves to use everything that is available to us in this universe for acquiring Allah’s satisfaction and desire. Without His permission and consent, we must not use a single particle in the universe, not even our own existence. Unlike the “humanists”, we do not think man and his desires to be the focus of the universe. Rather, we consider Allah and His will to be our ultimate desire. In other words, although Allah has created us free, we don’t allow ourselves to act independently and freely as we desire. By all means, we must be careful to perform the stipulation and condition of slavery and mannerism, and consider deeply the permission and satisfaction of our Master.
  2. We believe that all the powerful and mighty people of the world, regardless of the magnitude of their might and strength, are first and foremost, limited in their power. Secondly, even their limited and restricted power is related to and from the side of Allah, the High the Great. They don’t own and possess anything originally and by themselves. In reality, they too are beggars like all of us and hence, absolutely undeserving and unworthy of worship and obeisance. Hence, from the depth of our hearts, we declare that لا إلهَ إلاَّ اللَّه

“There is no god but Allah”.
That is, we confess that the only God is Allah, Who is worth worshipping, and that there is no deity or refuge besides Him. Yes, we worship only that Lord, whose power is unlimited and everlasting and is Needless of one and all. We pray only to Him and lower and demean ourselves only and only before Him.

  1. We believe that whoever turns away and rebels from Allah’s worship and regards imploring and beseeching Him as disdainful, he is bound to bow down before His lowly and degraded servants and indulge in sycophancy before them. For, nobody is complete and perfect and everybody is in need of someone else in one respect or another. One who does not seek help from Allah and is not willing to bow down before Him, he is bound to seek help from the creatures and show humility in front of them. In contrast to them, he who seeks help only from Allah will not be in need of anybody and will not bear anyone’s obligation on his head. He will always be mighty, successful, free, and triumphant.

Worship the True and Real God

  1. We monotheist Shias worship the True and Real God Who has created the entire universe and controls it. As opposed to the majority of people in the world, we don’t search God, the Creator, Regulator and Controller of the universe among His creatures and effects. Often, people develop images of their Lord, sometimes in idols of stones and wood, and at other times, mental and imaginary pictures. But the fact remains that every icon formed by man in nature or in his mind, is in reality, his creation and his fabrication, and not his Creator and Maker. Paying attention to these images is in actuality, turning away from the Lord, and certainly not turning towards Him.
  2. We believe that Allah is beyond the limit of understanding and thinking of all His creatures. We purify Allah and we praise Him. We consider Him far above our understanding and comprehension. We confess that we can never encompass Him, rather He is the One Who encompasses us. Like all divine Prophets and Messengers (peace be on them all), we express our disgust against anybody who intends to formulate images about Allah (whether mental or external) thereby degrading the Holy Presence of the Almighty.
  3. We consider ourselves responsible to be in the remembrance of Allah to the maximum possible extent. We don’t allow this insignificant world to cause us to forget the Great Lord. Particularly, in those conditions where Allah the Almighty has ordered us to perform some deeds or prohibited others, we should be utmost careful about Him and never think that He is not watching us. In our belief, to forget the remembrance of Allah or to regard Him as not seeing is a major crime. Consequently, whenever we are guilty of any of these two acts, i.e. neglecting Him or think that He is no seeing us, we estimate ourselves to be sinners. (We are unlike the majority of the world, who think that only acts like theft, murder, usurpation of rights, etc. are crimes. They are unaware that even not paying attention to the greatness of the Lord and neglecting Him despite being in His presence, is among the mightiest of crimes).

Kind, Beneficent, and Merciful Lord

10. We believe that we have a Kind, Beneficent and Merciful Lord. He encompasses us with His grace and mercy. We are indebted to Him and His bounties. We are of the view that He has showered us with His bounties and awards even before we became eligible or worthy of it (Surah Al-Insan [76:1]). It is our duty never to consider His bounties as less and resultantly, we must be incessantly busy in thanking Him. We firmly believe that anybody who values the bounties conferred by Allah on him and expresses his profuse gratitude to Him, the Benevolent and Generous Lord will increase His bounties on him.

Patience in calamities

11. We believe that Allah deserves praise and glorification not only for the bounties that He has conferred on us but also for the tests and calamities that He has destined for us. There is no defect, lacunae or shortcoming in the program chalked out by Him. In fact, He always desires good for His believing servants even in the troubles and calamities that He has fated for them. Hence, on the basis of the belief in divine decree and destiny
concerning the calamities predetermined by Him for us, we are patient and forbearing, continue to have faith in Him, and are steadfast in being positive in our thinking towards Him. We repeat along with Ameerul Momineen (a.s.),
َنَحْمَدُهُ عَلَى آلَائِهِ كَمَا نَحْمَدُهُ عَلَى بَلَائِهِ
“We praise Him for His calamities (i.e. the calamities that He inflicts on us) just as we praise Him for His bounties.2

Patience in calamities and afflictions is a trait of Prophets and Messengers of Allah (a.s.) and the infallible Imams (a.s.), the true monotheists. Those who lose their patience in calamities and develop pessimistic and negative ideas about their Creator, are in fact those who are weak in their belief of Tauheed and don’t recognize Allah well enough. Perhaps, they think that Allah the Almighty derives some pleasure or benefit by punishing His weak servants or that He has forgotten them or that in the face of oppression and tyranny, He has left them alone or that He has been stingy in helping His servants. We seek refuge in Allah from these false thoughts concerning Him! The real Shias have learnt from their Imams (a.s.) that all the difficulties of the world and all the oppressions and injustices unleashed by the tyrants of the world on Allah’s servants are all in the presence of Allah the Almighty and under His scrutiny. He is the One, Who on the basis of His infinite prudence and wisdom has opened the doors of calamities and afflictions on the believers.
This is in order to examine them and strengthen their faith concerning Him. He is the One Who will, on the Day of Judgment, take the right of all the oppressed people from the oppressors and reward the patient believers with unlimited compensation for their beautiful forbearance.

His domination and power over nature

  1. We believe that Allah the Almighty enjoys complete domination and power over nature and that He has the power to do anything and everything. We are of the view that Allah can change the system of the universe and implement whatever He intends. Therefore, we pin infinite and unlimited hopes on Him and are immensely inclined towards praying to and asking Him. {Today, most of the people are deceived by the Satan in the belief concerning Allah’s power and domination over nature. They think that one day Allah has made the system of the universe and now is helpless from interfering in it. They are of the view that the clouds, winds, moon, sun and the planets are in motion on their own and on the basis of the unchangeable regulations of the universe. They think that Allah cannot bring about any variation in their motion. Amazingly, these so-called intellectuals, who harp about their science and wisdom, actually believe that man can bring about some change in nature with his power and freedom, and can even initiate a new system, or rather, bring about corruption and disorder in the entire system. But they consider Allah, Who is the Creator of man, to be helpless from bringing about any such change in nature! For example, if man, due to his domination and authority on nature, can split the mountains, control the winds, change the direction of the clouds, convert barren clouds into pregnant ones, thereby preparing them to rain, is Allah the Almighty unable to do all these things? Can the angels and officers of Allah not bring about these transformations? Evidently, Allah and His angels and officers enjoy more power and authority than man to bring about these changes in nature. Hence, as per our belief, praying to Allah and asking Him for the descent
of rain in drought, cure of the incurable, solution of problems related to money, etc. are not only not in vain, rather, they are highly appropriate, wise and beneficial. Particularly, when Allah Himself has ordered that in all such situations man must seek help and assistance from Him so that whenever He wishes, He can improve the conditions to his advantage}.
  2. We observe divine help and assistance in all the good works that we do. We confess that but for this help, it would have been impossible for us to perform any good deed. Similarly, we believe that all our vices are against divine satisfaction and that we perpetrate them on account of our brazenness and rebellion, although Allah the Almighty has prohibited us from committing them and has given us the power not to commit them.

Fear and Hope

  1. We confess that we should not consider ourselves as secure from divine punishment because we have committed innumerable sins and negligent acts. Often, being inattentive towards Allah and heedless about His greatness, we indulge in vain and useless things are lazy and inactive in His worship and submit to evil, lowly, base and defiant actions. We admit that we deserve to be distanced from Allah the Almighty on account of the commission of defiant acts and sins, in particular, our heedlessness to Him. We actually deserve to be driven away from His Holy Presence and that He leaves us stranded with lowly and ignoble
people. We concede that Allah the Almighty has the right to punish and chastise us and declare us to be worthy of His penalization. If He does so, that is He does not pardon us, then indeed, He is justified. We believe that the prerequisite of servitude is His fear. Nevertheless, as Allah is Beneficent and Benevolent, He has opened for us the door of repentance to Him till our last breaths. This path of return instills a spirit of hope in us and encourages us to repent and seek forgiveness with an immense desire and a hopeful and optimistic heart, accompanied with shame and regret (for our misdeeds). We must never despair of His mercy and compassion. We are of the view that just as it is obligatory upon man not to consider him safe and secure from divine chastisement, it is equally important for him that he must not be disheartened of His mercy and forgiveness. We believe that hope and expectation from Allah and His fear, are both equally important requirements of His slavery and are obligatory on each and every person.

15.We acknowledge that even our good deeds are not worth being presented to Allah and by performing them, we do not oblige Him (making him in-debt). On the contrary, He has obliged us by allowing us to perform these acts. But for His help and assistance, we would not have had the grace to do these deeds3 (Surah Hude [11:88]: “…and my success lies only with Allah”). Moreover, our good deeds, which are very small and insignificant, are worthy for small servants like us but not for the Great and Infinite Allah.4 He is far too great that we perform deeds befitting Him. Hence, we confess with our entire existence that perhaps, we have not fulfilled the right of worship at all and therefore, seek forgiveness from Him and request Him to cover all our deeds, good and bad. That He should not deal with us according to what we deserve, rather let His forgiveness engulf us. Through this very medium, He should enumerate us among His believers and righteous servants. Thereafter, He should treat us with His grace, mercy and compassion, as He has promised the believers and His virtuous slaves.

16.We consider the entire universe to be under Allah’s observation. We believe that He is aware and seeing, and knows everything that occurs in the universe. In particular, we deem ourselves to be under the ultramicroscopic observation of Allah. Since He and His angels are constantly with us, we are joyous as well as fearful. Joyous because we are never stranded alone and have the perennial support of Allah. At the same time, we are anxious because we find ourselves in His holy presence and fear from becoming reckless and careless before Him.

Qur’an: The Word of God
17.We are fascinated by our Allah and love to hear His Speech. If He speaks and permits us to listen, we enjoy His Word. We love that He talks unto us about Himself, His works and His programs. We love that He tells us as to what He likes and what He detests. We love that He advises us and warns us. We love that He encourages and cautions us. We believe that Quran is His Speech. Through the words of Quran, Allah the Almighty has Himself conversed with us. Being enamored with Allah’s speech, we recite the Quran regularly and gain familiarity with our Lord. We reflect in its wordings and try to memorize its meanings.
We act on whatever we understand from Allah’s speech. Anything that we encounter in Allah’s word, which we don’t follow or comprehend in totality, we stop at it. We don’t indulge in whimsical interpretation because such an approach is tantamount to being impolite and disrespectful in front of Allah, which obviously, He does not like. It is highly discourteous that man attempts to interpret the speech of a great person, which he has not understood fully, on the basis of his conjecture, speculation and probability, thereby removing it from its original meaning. Allah, the Almighty, in the Holy Quran has addressed different types of people and of varying levels. It is not necessary that everybody understand the meanings of all the Quranic verses. They should know that the addressees of these verses are people who are more knowledgeable and more important like the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.), the Ahle Bait (a.s.), their special Shias and their confidantes. We Shias, instead of attempting speculative interpretation and commentary of its hidden and higher concepts (ambiguous verses), believe that insight in knowledge and the correct method towards knowledge is to have a brief but firm faith in these unclear verses. That is, though we do not follow the meanings of these ambiguous verses, we acknowledge that these are the words of Allah and we declare:
“O Allah! We believe in your words.
This entire book is from Your side. Whatever we understand of it, we act upon it and what we do not comprehend, we leave its knowledge and interpretation to You.”
Besides this confession, we believe that the path to the understanding of the Divine Word and the Quranic verses is not closed. In order to understand the purpose and object of Allah, we must refer to the sayings of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) and his Ahle Bait (a.s.) so that new vistas of cognition and knowledge open for us and they explain for us the
aim of Allah’s speech5.

The Prayer
18.We Shias, just as we like that our God should talk to us, are also fond of sitting in conversation with our Lord. Allah, the Almighty, out of His grace and benevolence, has shown us the way to His presence. He has permitted us to talk to Him whenever we want and in any language that we desire. We can proceed to His court through His praise and
glorification, and by asking for our needs. Moreover, through Salat, He has granted us a special opportunity to gain as much proximity to Him as we want and to enter a distinguished and private conversation with Him. Therefore, we lend extraordinary significance to Salat and consider it to be the best action that a person can perform. The closest that he can be to his Lord is during the condition of Salat. We hold exceptional attachment towards the reading of supplications and invocations prescribed by the
infallible leaders (by referring to the treasure-chest of supplications that we have). We derive remarkable pleasure by uttering the praises and glorification of Allah and by pleading and supplicating to Him.

Being proud for this belief!
19.We have acquired these special and invaluable beliefs from the school of the Holy Quran and the Ahle Bait (a.s.). We believe that most people of this world are distant from these concepts and far from these conditions. For example,
• Many of the global populace does not believe in Allah because they have liberated themselves from His worship and bondage, to the extent that they look at Him with doubt and skepticism, although, there is no doubt concerning Him6.
He is the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth, the Controller and Regulator of the beautiful and purposeful system of creation, and the Refuge of His creatures in times of difficulties and calamities. They (the skeptics) disregard and ignore Allah and His signs, while we are exactly the opposite. For us, Allah and His signs are the greatest and most important.
• Some people feel ashamed to ask help from Allah. They are embarrassed to confess that they are needy, paupers and beggars in front of Allah. Their arrogance prevents them from beseeching Allah in times of need and difficulties. Perhaps, most of them have never
prostrated and invoked Allah or cried before Him, throughout their lifetimes. But a Shia, emulating the Prophets (a.s.) and his Imams (a.s.), is very attentive towards crying, wailing, turning to, seeking help from and refuge in Allah.
• Besides these, there are people who have polarized their lives around themselves and their carnal desires. They believe that man must not limit and restrict himself to the laws of religion or to anybody’s commands and prohibitions, including that of Allah. Man must be free and liberated. He must seek personal benefits at all costs and in all places. He must be on the lookout for expanding his power and authority over the world. But we Shias, as opposed to these self-centered egoists, consider Allah’s Will as the focus of all human beings and as a limitation for ourselves. We are always prepared to sacrifice all that we have in the way of Allah’s Will.
• Most of the people degrade themselves and indulge in sycophancy of the rulers, the powerful, the mighty and the influential. They shower undue adulation and praises on them to the extent that they even appreciate their misdeeds, and obey all their commands, right or wrong. They throw themselves at their hands and feet. To attract their attention, they are even willing to trample upon the satisfaction of Allah. Consequently, even Allah has left them unto themselves. Today, this lowly mode of life is quite customary among most people of the world. But the Shias believe that this is not the correct style of life and in fact, is tantamount to the worship of other than God and undeserving of human status.
• Today, the majority of the world is still involved in idol worship. A large chunk of the population of Asia, Africa, Europe, North and South Antartica, North and South Pole still worship idols and images. In many of the so-called civilizations of the modern world, there are a number of superstitions prevalent like considering the horseshoe as a sign of good-luck and number 13 as unlucky. They do not understand that the only cause of fortune or misfortune is Allah’s Will. One must turn only to Him and seek refuge in Him, and not in those things in which Allah has not put any positive or negative effects and we don’t have any information about them from Allah’s side. The Shia school takes pride in the fact that it believes in the effects and blessings of only those things in which Allah has placed these effects and blessings and the Holy Quran, the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) and the Ahle Bait (a.s.) have mentioned these for them. Therefore, in each of the aforementioned paragraphs, we found groups of people wandering in deviation. Each one of us, by reflecting and
deliberating on the aforementioned and by comparing the Shia beliefs with those prevalent in the societies of the world, must pay attention to the numerous deviations from basic monotheism in the contemporary world. We must increasingly realize the importance of the teachings of the Holy Quran and the Ahle Bait (a.s.) in the moulding of our personalities in an honourable manner in the backdrop of Divine Recognition. Hence, we are indebted to the Book of Allah and the Ahle Bait (a.s.) due to our monotheistic personality. Similarly, as we see that only the Holy Quran and the Ahle Bait (a.s.) have spoken in such an enlightening and appropriate manner about Allah, we realize that the Quran is indeed the word of Allah Himself. That Allah, the Almighty, has made the Ahle Bait (a.s.) aware of the concepts of Quran. Otherwise, it would have been impossible for them to explain these concepts as is
worthy of Allah’s position; Because others who intended to comment on the Quran based on their speculation have spoken things that are not at all worthy and deserving of Allah’s position and status.
20.Now, with the Grace of Allah, as we have gained such beautiful and enlightening cognition of Him, and have been invited to the gathering of the true monotheists, we must consider this as an opportunity. From now onwards, we must never deprive ourselves of these beliefs concerning Allah even for a second. Now, we sign off the discussion of our beliefs concerning Allah by pledging Him as follows:
• We pledge that we shall never withdraw ourselves from Him; we shall preserve His sanctity; we will love and support His friends; we shall take His enemies as our enemies and express our disgust towards them.
• We pledge to Allah that we shall remain steadfast in His way; we will always seek His satisfaction even if it leads to worldly losses for us.
• We promise to Allah that we will learn the values of the Holy Quran (the Book of Divine Monotheism and Recognition). We shall remain indebted and grateful to the teachings of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) and the Ahle Bait (a.s.), who have taught us the Holy Quran through their words, actions and lifestyle. They were, are and shall remain our practical role models in Tawheed.
